Back in the 70's-80's in Australia we had these. I'm not sure if smokes were called 'fags' in the USA, but as a kid we used to love asking the shop keeper for "a pack of fags" One end was died red to resemble the lit cigarette, political correctness saw the name change to fads and the red disappear but just like your version, they still taste like crap.

Shit, I forgot these existed! As a kid I would bike up to a candy store by my house with some friends, buy some of these and we would stand outside acting like we were smoking cigs like the cool folks.
